Instructions to authors..../ Instructions aux auteurs....

African Plant Protection provides a unique forum for research in the plant protection sciences, and promotes African authorship and/or contents. The journal is multidisciplinary, and includes original research and review articles, both basic and applied, in the pest management of crops and plants. The journal supports primary scientific articles, technical reports, short communications and review articles. Papers dealing with miscellaneous observations and species will be considered only if there are special circumstances. Rigorous review standards are applied.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted in English. Three copies must be submitted, in double spacing on A4 paper with a margin of 3 cm on all sides. A short abstract must be provided as well as up to ten key words. To facilitate typesetting, italics should be indicated by underlining rather than by an italic font. All pages must be numbered consecutively, including those carrying references, tables, and legends to figures, all of which should be placed after the text. Do not use line numbers. All illustrations (linedrawings, graphs, maps, photographs) are to be numbered consecutively as figures. Annotated copies of line-drawings and photographs must be submitted with each copy of the manuscript. Lettering on graphs and figures must be uniform and the Helvetica (Swiss) typeface is recommended. Original illustrations and a diskette containing the manuscript, as well as a printed copy, must be submitted once the paper has been accepted for publication. If possible, the manuscript should be compiled in WordPerfect or Microsoft Word or exported to these programs in the Windows environment.

Authors should consult recent issues of African Plant Protection for general arrangement of subject matter, including the use of headings, arrangement of tables and illustration style. The Système International d'Unités (SI) must be used. A decimal point (not a comma) must be used when citing decimal numbers.

Usage of scientific names must comply with the requirements of the: International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Third edition); International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (1988); Classification and Nomenclature of Viruses, Fifth Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses; and for bacteria with usage in the `Journal of Systematic Bacteriology.'

Telegraphic style must be used in taxonomic descriptions which should include a diagnosis/differential diagnosis. The `discussion' or `remarks' section should be placed last. A taxon heading should be followed by a reference to the original description and should always include the author, date and page number but not the title of the publication as this is provided in the reference section. Dichotomous keys should be used. The abbreviations gen.n., sp.n., syn.n., comb.n. should be used for distinguishing new taxa, new synonymies or new combinations.

References

All references in the text, using the author-date system, must appear at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. In the text the names of two co-authors are linked by an ampersand (&); for three or more the first author's name is followed by et al. Examples in the text are: Jones (1999a); (Jones 1999a); Jones & Mothlasedi (1998a,b, 1999); (Jones & Mothlasedi 1999a; Ranthakwe et al. 1999); Ranthakwe et al. (1999) or (Ranthakwe et al. 1999). Other references could include Jonker (pers. comm.); (Jonker, pers. comm.); Jonker (unpubl.); (Jonker, unpubl.); Jonker (in prep.), and in these cases the source together with an address must be listed in the acknowledgements section; reference to e.g. Jonker & Jonker (in press) must be taken up in the references section.

The following examples show the method of reference citation (note spacing, capitalisation and punctuation):

Tables

Tables should be submitted on separate sheets, each with a concise, self-explanatory heading. Tables should be arranged to fit the printed page horizontally (142 mm); the number of columns must be kept to a minimum.

Illustrations

Original drawings and graphs must be in black ink on white board or drawing film, and permit reduction to about one half to one third of the original size. The dimensions should not exceed 297 _ 210 mm; illustrations should either be arranged to fit into a single column (width 68 mm) or to fill the page horizontally. Only good quality photographic reproductions will be accepted. Illustrations generated electronically should be submitted in e.g. WMF, TIFF, CDR, EPS, GEM, PLT or PIF format, preferably in one of the vector (not bitmap) formats.

All illustrations (line-drawings, graphs, maps, photographs) will be called figures (Fig. or Figs) and are to be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Each sheet of figures must be clearly identified by author/s name and figure number/s. Lettering and numbering in figures are not provided by the printer; sizes should be selected for uniformity and legibility after reduction. Magnifications must be indicated as scale bars on the figures. Legends to figures must be typed on one or more sheets of paper, and should be clear, unambiguous and concise. Black and white glossy photographs of high quality and good contrast must be submitted. Colour illustrations may be submitted, provided the cost is borne by the author.

Proofs

Page proofs are provided for the purpose of checking printer's errors, and not for author's corrections such as adjustments to language, style and punctuation. Author's corrections will be charged to authors.

Offprints

Twenty-five offprints are provided free of charge. Orders for additional offprints must be placed when returning the page proofs.
