AIMS AND SCOPE

The Journal of Civil Engineering, JKUAT aims to publish original research papers of high standard, containing material of broad interest and of significant contribution to civil engineering, with emphasis being placed on material that is applicable to the solution of practical problems. Submitted papers are normally reviewed by at least two renowned referees, and the results relayed to authors as soon as possible.

LENGTH AND LAYOUT

Each manuscript of the paper is limited to 6 (minimum) and 15 (maximum) pages of A4 size single spaced. It is strongly advised to utilize the full space that is allocated to each paper. Since your papers will be printed directly from the manuscripts you submit please follow all the instructions to ensure uniformity in the appearance of paper. All text and artwork (including figure captions) should fall within a typing area that ensures an all round margin of 25mm on A4 size paper.

TYPING

The text should be typed in black or word-processed using New Times Roman, 12 pt. The normal typing font (PICA typeface or equivalent size, with carbon ribbon rather than fabric; it produces a sharper image) with single space is strongly recommended.

TITLE

The title should be short, specific and informative. Type the exact title of the paper in upper and lower case with bold typeface using font 14. Please centre the title.

AUTHOR'S NAME AND AFFILIATION

Type the name(s) of author(s) with plain typeface, and centered. Each name should appear in the order of first name, middle name and last name. Please designate affiliation of each author by typing superscript numbers next to his/her name in the list of authors(s). The complete list of affiliation(s) and the full postal address should be given after the list of author(s), and should be left aligned.

ABSTRACT

An abstract outlining the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper should be given within 15 lines. Do not have references or displayed equations in the abstract. A list of up to five keywords may be included in italics below the Abstract.

STYLE OF TEXT

The main text should follow a standard sequence (e.g. introduction, method, results and discussion). Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper should be clearly indicated. A main heading should have one line space above and below it. A secondary heading should have one line of space above it but no space below it. A third grade heading should have one line of space above it. There is no full stop following the heading.

Paragraphs should be indented five (5) character spaces without any line space above. The text must be ORIGINAL, not photo-copied, unless the copy is absolutely clear, not blurred or with portions of letters missing.

TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables should be numbered consecutively and should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript e.g. in the graphs. All graphs, diagrams and other drawings should be referred to as Figures, and numbered consecutively. Place table titles above the tables, and figure captions below the figures. Allow one line of space between the table titles and the table and between the figure and its caption. Allow two lines of space between the table or figure and the adjacent text.

EQUATIONS

All equations must be set or clearly typed. When referring to equations in the text, preface the number with the word “Eqn.”. All equations should be centered and have one line space between equations and text material. Displayed equations should be numbered simply (1), (2), (3). The numbers should appear at the extreme right of the line in parentheses.

REFERENCES

References should be referred in the text by the last name of the 1st author and the year of publication (e.g. Chemelil, et al., 2000) and fully listed in alphabetical order of the last name of the 1st author at the end of the paper. Please ensure that references are complete e.g. Chemelil, M.C. and Smout, I.K. (2000), “Validation and quality of hydrological data series”, J. Civ. Eng., JKUAT, Vol. 5, pp. 38-48.

SUBMISSIONS

Manuscripts (together with a covering letter) should be submitted in triplicate to the;
