Instructions to authors..../ Instructions aux auteurs....

All papers submitted to South African Journal of Chemical Engineering are subject to refereeing by an international board of referees; the journal will be published on the Internet. English is therefore the preferred language. Authors are requested to follow the guidelines closely.

One printed copy of the manuscript is to be submitted together with its word processor file on a 3_” disk or CD, or as an e-mail attachment of that file. The file format should preferably be WordPerfect or Word executed on A4 page size and meeting all aspects of the layout given below.

The original manuscript is to be retained by the author, pending refereeing, requested changes and acceptance.

Typing The main text should fully justified using 12 point 'Optima' [available as CG Omega or Zapf Humanist 601]. Margins are 25 mm (1") all sides; top margin on the title page only: 50 mm (2"). The text line spacing should be single, with an extra space of _ line height between paragraphs. Superscripts and subscripts should be in 10 point characters. Emphasize text by using bold + italics, not by underlining. The paper manuscript should be printed using a high qualityprinter and white bond paper printed on one side only.

Title page This should contain (only) the following:

* The centred title of the paper in 15 point bold italics, capitalizing the first word and the significant words; no underlining.

* Names of author(s) on one line, company affiliation(s) on the next line.

* The postal and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed on the following line.

* A heading, 'SYNOPSIS', centred and not underlined, followed by an informative summary in English of the main issues and conclusions reached (100 - 200 words).

* A flush left heading in 'Small Caps' 'KEYWORDS:', followed by the selected keywords

* The addition of a 'SINOPSIS' in Afrikaans, the second language used in the tertiary teaching of engineering in the RSA, is optional.

* A balanced page layout with a 50 mm (2") top margin on this title page.

Main text This starts on the second page after the insertion of a list of the SYMBOLS USED, where applicable. The title is not repeated. Headings: flush left in a level sequence of BOLD CAPITALS, Bold and Italics. Page margins all 25 mm (1"). No page numbering.

Tables, Figures, Equations Every table and figure must be referred to in the text. Preferably they are to be inserted where it is most appropriate. Take into account that the printed version of the Journal, supplied to libraries, is issued in A5 format. The lettering and symbols in tables and figures must be such that they are easily distinguished after a linear reduction to about 71 %. A similar reduction applies to on-screen viewing. Figures embedded in the text need to complemented with a separate graphics file for each figure. Table lines should preferably be medium grey. Use lines only where essential. Equations must be numbered flush right in round brackets. Equations do not need to be written with a 'equation writer' which produces a graphics figure. Normal text with partial line spacings may be used.

References Insert these in the text in square brackets embracing the first author's surname and year of publication (add: a, b, c... to the year if the same surname appears more than once in a year). List the references at the end of the paper in alphabetical order in single line spacing with a hanging indent or blank line of _ line height between references.
