Abstract: Polyolefins such as polyethylene generally show poor adhesion to metals. Chemical modification with carboxylic acids improves adhesion. Grafting itaconic anhydride onto polyethylene in a compounding extruder results in an excellent adhesive polymer; it avoids the processing problems associated with the conventional maleic anhydride method.
