Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Library Services: Carnegie Project Progress Report
Overview of period 1 April 30 June 2002 from Millicent Emslie, Manager Dissemination of Information
The major progress to report during this time has been the delivery of equipment and the acquisition and processing of the book collections. In addition, five members of staff have been appointed and are receiving intensive training. Having acquired most of the necessary equipment and the extra members of staff , we are now equipped to implement the proposed projects.
Orders for equipment have been delivered and this includes personal computers and printers; Bryte boxes, monitors and keyboards; extra licences to accommodate more users on the library computer system; barcode scanners and network printers.
Two portable overhead projectors and a television/video recorder combo have been received.
- Building and promoting services to children
Ten Book mobiles ,with 100 books each for grades 1,2 and 3 have been bought. Additional library material acquired and processed has been Storyteller reading scheme for grades 1,2 and 3; Learning channel videos; People and places encyclopaedia and the Animal encyclopaedia.
- Building and promoting services at NTSPs
We have received trestle tables; Book mobiles; Books (Afrikaans fiction); a Notebook computer (laptop) and a Panasonic digital video camera. Two Tieman clearview Twinkle Stars have been installed at Branches to be used by partially sighted borrowers.
- Building and supporting community participation
A public address system; compact disc player; tape deck and a video recorder have been bought.
- Dissemination of information
A colour photocopy machine has been installed to be used to make displays, fliers and other promotional material. This machine will also be used to generate income by making colour copies for members of the public. A Sony Mavica digital camera; two notebooks (laptops); an upgraded scanner; a data projector and an upgraded personal computer have been acquired.
Plans for the following quarters of this year
- Plans for the launching of the Carnegie logo at a public ceremony on 9 September are in hand
- Three schools have been visited and approved for the block loan system. These are Vakanibantu and Kwanoxolo Primary Schools and the Lovemore Park Farm School. They will be commissioned in September.
- SAPPI (a local paper mill) has been approached to sponsor the monthly rental at the NTSP at Gqebera and the outreach site at Khayamnandi (Despatch) should be ready for occupation in September.
- Courses have been arranged for intensive computer orientation and the use of software packadges. This is in preparation for the installation of workstations at the branches.
- Orders have been placed for a double cab vehicle: (delivery expected Oct/Nov 2002) and 2 trailers (out to tender) and 1 x vehicle: mini bus (delivery expected Oct/Nov 2002).
