Since its inception in 1964, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) has been engaged in promoting scientific disciplines to strengthen research work for the progress of developing countries. The Centre organises about 45 events each year, including workshops, seminars and conferences. The total number of scientists visiting the centre throughout the year is about 4,000.

The ICTP initiated a donation programme in 1980 in order to provide universities in developing countries with books, journals and the proceedings of international conferences in a range of scientific disciplines. Appeals were made to individuals, libraries and publishing companies for books and journals they no longer needed for distribution to libraries in developing countries with the Centre acting as intermediary. The Centre receives donations consisting of fairly recent and complete sets of scientific journals, textbooks and conference proceedings in paper or CD-Rom version. The complete collection of journals on CD-Roms of the American Physical Society is distributed amongst Least Developed Countries. The Donation Programme also acquires new books for institutions in developing countries upon request.

The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) was established in 1985 to support research projects in Third World countries and promote South/South and South/North collaboration. Since its inception, it has worked closely with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in running the Donation Programme. It concentrates on the fields of biology and chemistry.

The ICTP/TWAS Donation Programme has distributed annually around 20,000 books, proceedings and journals among a few hundred institutions in 100 developing countries. Journals are despatched directly from the donor to the recipient, whereas books and proceedings are sent to the Centre and then on to the recipients. The Centre and the Academy cover the shipping costs of material sent to Trieste and to developing countries, if donors are unable to do so.

Today, aware of the new technologies available and the advent of electronic journals, the Abdus Salam ICTP/TWAS Donation Programme, in collaboration with the ICTP Scientific Computer Section and ICTP Library, has developing a prototype information retrieval system called `eJournals Delivery Service'. It distributes individual scientific articles via e-mail to world scientists who do not have access to sufficient bandwidth to download material from the internet in a timely manner and/or cannot afford the connection. Famous publishers such as Elsevier, American Physical Society, Institute of Physics Publishing, World Scientific give free access to their journals through the eJDS. Providing scientists with current literature will support their ongoing research. The eJournals Delivery Service allows scientists to search and/or download articles using e-mail only and to follow hyperlinks as if they were surfing the web via a live internet connection. Full details, including a list of the participating journals, can be accessed on: http://www.ejds.org  or sending an e-mail message to: [email protected]

The Donation Programme specially acknowledges participation from: American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, Elsevier Science Publishers, IEEE - Signal Processing Society, IUPAP, Lindsay Ross, The Royal Society of London, The Royal Swedish Academy, Springer, Wiley, World Scientific Publishing Company.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is an international scientific society of more than 41,000 members from 130 countries, of which about 20% are students. AGU is a worldwide scientific community that advances, through unselfish cooperation in research, the understanding of Earth and space for the benefit of humanity.

AGU's mission is to:

  • promote the scientific study of Earth and its environment in space and to disseminate the results to the public,
  • promote cooperation among scientific organisations involved in geophysics and related disciplines,
  • initiate and participate in geophysical research programs,
  • advance the various geophysical disciplines through scientific discussion, publication, and dissemination of information.

AGU's activities are focused on the organisation and dissemination of scientific information in the interdisciplinary and international field of geophysics: atmospheric and ocean sciences; solid-Earth sciences; hydrologic sciences; and space sciences.

AGU's publications programme includes both general information publications and specialised and technical works in both print and electronic media. These include a weekly newspaper, Eos; 14 peer reviewed research journals one of which is the Journal of Geophysical Research; 9 book series plus a number of miscellaneous books and maps; and assorted special reports.

AGU attempts to encourage the broadest possible membership by maintaining individual membership dues at the lowest possible level. It also has arrangements with other international scientific societies to provide access to AGU journals at low rates.

Additionally AGU has established and administers two membership grant programs, as follows:
The Berkner Membership Program provides free, three-year memberships to individual scientists in countries striving to develop their geophysical sciences, often under the burden of low gross national product.
The Lend-A-Hand Program allows Members to help their colleagues in countries with currency restrictions or low exchange rates. Through, Members provide a scientist with the full benefits of AGU for two years. Members may also donate AGU journal subscriptions.

Founded in 1899, the American Physical Society's (APS) mission is the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. In support of this mission, APS publishes primary research and review journals.

With roughly 30% of the Society's membership living and working outside the United States, the APS Office of International Affairs has made a significant commitment to conduct a variety of international programmes and outreach. As physics is an international enterprise, APS seeks to involve the leadership and membership of the Society in the establishment of bi- and multi-lateral relations with international physics community.

APS Articles and CD-ROM Distribution and Print Donation Programs

The APS has a significant programme for the provision of electronic access to articles and for distribution of CDs to Third World institutions through the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. (See the separate entry for the ICTP for further details on their `E-Journals Delivery Service' and the CD distribution programme.)

In addition, The Forum on International Physics of the APS maintains a list of potential donors of paper journals and books. Individuals and institutions are encouraged to send details of available or required journals to Professor Ulloa for inclusion in the lists. If interested, the recipient will contact the donor directly and arrange for shipping. The APS will not pay shipping costs as these are normally covered by the recipient institution. ICTP in Trieste may help defray shipping costs in some cases.

The International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics is a member of the ICSU (International Council for Science) family. Affiliated to it are the national adhering bodies of 50 countries. Its function is to support research and teaching in biophysics.

IUPAB has four Task Forces concerned with major areas of biophysics:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Capacity Building and Education in Biophysics
  • NMR in Biological Sciences
  • Biomedical Spectroscopy

The Task Forces also arrange specialist meetings either associated with the Congresses or, more commonly, in the intervals between Congresses. The Union has funds that it uses to support conferences, schools and workshops; these funds are very limited and are normally used to provide `pump-priming' support to meeting organisers. The Union gives priority in the allocation of its funds to events that will promote biophysics in the developing countries and that will facilitate the participation of young scientists in the conferences that it supports.

The official journal of the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB), Quarterly Reviews of Biophysics covers the whole field of biophysics, from ion channels to DNA topology and from X-ray diffraction to NMR. Its publication IUPAB NEWS is available online.
