About African Journals OnLine (AJOL)  / A propos d’AJOL

African Journals OnLine (AJOL) is a service to provide access to African published research, and increase worldwide knowledge of indigenous scholarship.

The service provides:

·         abstracts (where available),

·         links to full text available elsewhere on the web,

·         sophisticated searching within AJOL titles,

·         document delivery (the proceeds of which are paid back to the journals),

·         Email alerts (email notification when new issues are published),

·         Usage data for journals giving the number of people visiting their journal.

There is no charge to journals participating in the service.

The service is continually expanding and adding new titles, and we welcome information about journals not included on the service – please contact [email protected] 

During 2004/2005, we will be seeking African partners to participate in management of the service – not only managing individual journals, but also taking responsibility for the document delivery function and providing support to journals and users of AJOL. History

African Journals OnLine (AJOL) began in May 1998 as a pilot project managed by the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publication (INASP). It aimed to promote the awareness and use of African-published journals in the sciences by providing access to tables of contents (TOCs) on the Internet.

The project was evaluated at the end of 1999, and it was recommended that AJOL be continued and expanded to include more journals in more subject areas, as well as abstracts of articles.

At its relaunch in August 2000, AJOL featured 50 English language African-published journals in agricultural sciences, science and technology, health and social sciences. It also provided abstracts where available, and introduced a key word search service and photocopy document delivery service for all titles.

In 2001/2002 titles from South Africa and Francophone Africa were added, as well as many more from the rest of Africa.

By the end of 2003, the service provided TOCs and abstracts for over 175 journals, from 21 African countries, including some Francophone journals, and many with French abstracts.

Monitoring and evaluation

Continuous monitoring and evaluation helps to assess the impact of using the Internet to promote African-published journals.

·         During 2003, almost 4000 people registered to use the service

·         During 2003, over 650 document delivery requests were fulfilled

Support

INASP is grateful to Unesco, CDSI (Committee for the Dissemination of Scientific Information) and the National Academy of Sciences for contributing to the costs of the pilot project; to NORAD for providing a three-year grant over 2000 to 2002; and to Danida, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sida:SAREC, DFID and Unesco for support to enable additional expansion of the service.

Other associated projects

INASP is also discussing establishing similar OnLine journal projects in other regions, particularly in South and SouthEast Asia. We are also helping to support some African journals to publish their full text online and our Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) provides support to researchers around the world through access to information and training and support for the use of information. Ce service propose :

·         une livraison de document (dont le produit est reversé aux revues),

La participation des revues à ce service n’encourt aucuns frais.

Historique

AJOL (African Journals Online) est né en mai 1998 sous la forme d’un projet pilote dirigé par INASP. Ce projet visait à mieux faire connaître les revues scientifiques publiées en Afrique et à promouvoir leur utilisation en mettant le sommaire de ces revues en ligne sur Internet.

En 1999, une évaluation du projet recommandait la poursuite du programme AJOL et son extension à un plus grand nombre de revues et de disciplines, mais aussi à des résumés d’articles.

Lors de son nouveau lancement en août 2000, AJOL couvrait 50 revues anglophones publiées en Afrique consacrées aux sciences de l’agriculture, aux sciences et techniques, à la santé et aux sciences sociales. Il proposait églament des résumés, une fonction de recherche par mot-clé et un service de livraison de photocopie de document pour tous les titres.

En 2001 et 2002 sont venus s’ajouter des titres d’Afrique du Sud et d’Afrique francophone, ainsi que bien d’autres du reste de l’Afrique.

Fin 2003, ce service proposait des sommaires et résumés de plus de 175 revues de 21 pays africains, y compris des revues francophones et de nombreux résumés en français.

Suivi et évaluation

Un processus continu de suivi et d’évaluation contribue à évaluer l’impact de l’Internet en tant qu’outil de promotion des revues publiées en Afrique. En 2003 :

·         plus de 4.000 personnes se sont inscrites au service

·         plus de 650 demandes de livraison de document ont été satisfaites

INASP examine la possibilité de mettre en place des projets similaires dans d’autres régions du monde, notamment en Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est.
