Ecquid Novi is considered in respected international academic circles to be the foremost journal for journalism research on the African continent. Founded in 1980, the journal's policy of keeping abreast with, and sometimes being ahead of major trends, coupled with a rigorous refereeing system, has earned it a place worthy of an international journal in the field of journalism research. The journal's focus is on Southern Africa and Africa, but its academic interest and scope is international. The purpose of Ecquid Novi is to foster a better understanding of journalism, media studies and mass communication as research disciplines, and to build links between these academic fields and media professions.

Ecquid Novi is published twice a year and comprises of a research and an academic overview section on aspects of print and electronic journalism, and mass communication in general. There is also a discussion forum for contributions from the field of journalism, as well as a section for book reviews. It is indexed by, amongst others, The Index to South African Periodicals (ISAP). 

Ecquid Novi is published by Media Tenor South Africa - Institute for Media Analysis, in co-operation with the School for Communication Studies, Potchefstroom University (South Africa); Innovatio Publishers (Germany); and Imssa, the Institute for Media Studies in Southern Africa (South Africa).
