Objecitves and Scopes of JEMP
JEMP is a Biannual Scientific Journal Published by The Ethiopian Society of General Medical Practice
Local health research programmes have a substantial role to play in building and promoting health care developments in Ethiopia. These researches are important not only for their scientific merits but also for their ability to address the operational problems of the health care delivery system. Most practicing physicians to this end should be widely encouraged to participate in medical researches in conjunction with their regular professional activities.
Special efforts should be made to improve the opportunity, the inclination and talents of these professionals in research activities. This can be realized by introducing and motivating research initiatives either through the ongoing health care programs in the health institution or as part of the undergraduate course requirements.
Currently, practicing general practitioners are not adequately motivated to involve themselves in applied research within the basic health services. Aware of this fact, the Society of General Medical Practice will draw viable strategies to expand research programs for these practitioners so that they contribute to the betterment of public health in Ethiopia.
Every physician should keep careful clinical records of his patients to permit proper assessment of their illness and the management. Special attention should be given to clinical evaluation which constitutes the basis for rational therapy and the experience of physicians contribute to the total knowledge of its usefulness and effects.
The publication of the results of such clinical investigation, case reports or the development of standard procedures will serve as the best channel through which a limited number of practicing physicians make permanent their contribution to both teaching and research. The technique of writing a good scientific paper also can be learned progressively through active involvement in medical publications.
The value of regular publication of a scientific journal targeting general practitioners working in distant health units can not be overemphasized. The Ethiopian Society of General Medical Practice Editorial Board hence should try to meet this demand.
To date, there are only two Medical Journals available for scientific publication in Ethiopia. These are the Journal of Public Health Association and Ethiopian Medical Journal of EMA. A lot of grievance is regularly vowed among the professional community on the delays of scientific outputs. Editors of the Journals tell it is due to the existing back loads that it requires at least two years for most papers to appear on the publications even after fulfilling the standard.
The adopted constitution of ESGMP in this connection provides an article in the objective section that states that the society shall promote scientific and educational activities for members. In line with the above statement and other related provisions ESGMP has organized two standing committees namely the Editorial Board and Research/Education Committees of the Society.
The editorial board is currently issuing a quarterly Newsletter, entitled the General Practitioner which has gone through three consecutive editions. The board has outlined its term of reference and is also preparing ESGMPS Editorial policy. The Editorial Boards function has been further organized to facilitate smooth functioning on publications into a Newsletter team Journal team and for public medical Newspaper of the society. The board is currently staffed with competent and highly skilled individuals.
