Analytical Chemistry Web Resources
A compilation of resources (by Ghirma Moges) useful to support teaching and research in the field of analytical chemistry, including technical and specialized databases, encyclopaedias and dictionaries, journals, university departments, organizations, societies, chemical companies and manufacturers, news sources, and much more. There is also a special section devoted to 'Chemistry in Africa' with links to educational and research materials, online textbooks, and other tools and resources for students.

The Anthropological Index of the Royal Anthropological Institute
This index - freely accessible for educational and non-commercial purposes (including private study) - is based on the journal holdings of the Library of the Department of Ethnography at the British Museum (Museum of Mankind). The library receives periodicals from around the world in all areas of cultural and social anthropology, ethnography, and material culture. The fully searchable index covers articles in all languages and provides English translations of citations from non-Roman scripts. Results of index searches can either be displayed online, or sent as an Email message to the searcher's Email address. Online help lines and lists of journals indexed are also available. Argus Clearinghouse
Central access point to more than 1,500 topic-specific guides to Internet resources, each of which is critically evaluated. A good starting point. http://www.clearinghouse.net/


Best of Science
Best of Science is a peer-reviewed, freely accessible online publication "containing original reports whose conclusions represent a substantial advance in understanding of an important problem, or reviews of broad general interest." It covers five major areas: exact sciences, technology, biological sciences, medical sciences, and human sciences. Best of Science has been created to respond to the recommendations of the Second ICSU-UNESCO International Conference "Electronic Publishing in Science", to provide an alternative electronic journal model-free-access reading, transparency, peer-reviewing, and reduced fees for scientists from developing countries and those in transition.

Biogate
Compiled by staff at the Library of Ecology, the National Resource Library of Biological Sciences at Lund University in Sweden, this is a portal to "our 1,000 best links in the biological sciences." Search, or browse by 11 broad subject categories in the biological sciences, which are divided into sub-groups showing the number of links for each, e.g. Zoology is sub-divided into 12 sub-categories for systematics and taxonomy, anatomy and morphology, animal ecology, insects, fish, birds, mammals, etc. http://biogate.lub.lu.se/


 BIOME
Consortium-based hub (still in the process of development) providing access to quality resources on the Internet in the fields of agriculture, food, forestry, pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, nursing, dentistry, biological research, veterinary sciences, the natural world, botany, zoology, and more. It will consist of five subject gateways, which are cross-searchable and cross-browsable. The service is coordinated by the University of Nottingham, who are joined by a formidable range of high profile partners and content providers from the UK health and life science sectors. http://biome.ac.uk/


Books for Academics (BFA)
Hosted by the University of Exeter, BFA aims to link the academic community directly to academic publishers' online catalogues. Users can browse any number of online catalogues while retaining the BFA Web site navigation frame; or can perform searches by publisher, by subject/category, or keyword. Computer Science: A Guide to Selected Resources on the Internet (by Michael Knee)

Cyber Times Navigator Compiled by Rich Meislin, this is an excellent guide to the Internet from the York Times. EEVL: The Internet Guide to Engineering, Mathematics and Computing
This portal provides quick access to the best engineering, mathematics, and computing information sources available on the Internet. Resources were selected, catalogued, classified and subject-indexed by a team of UK experts and information specialists. EEVL also provides engineering search engines to UK engineering sites, engineering e-journals, engineering newsgroups, and to other specialized information services in the field.

Search for e-journals at this site using keywords, or browse e-journals by title or by LC subject headings; you can limit searches to (i) free publications, (2) peer-reviewed publications. Engineering Information Sources and Access - EISA-2
Eisa-2 is a quick Web access tool designed for engineering students, particularly for upper division undergraduates, containing basis sources, search techniques, and tools that every graduating engineer should know, together with self-paced tutorials. Founded by a consortium of six of the world's leading educational and cultural institutions (Columbia University, London School of Economics & Political Science, Cambridge University Press, the British Library, Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the New York Public Library), this is a new commercial site for “authenticated knowledge” and education on the Internet. It will make available the content and courses, and educational and cultural resources, of universities, libraries, and museums for a worldwide audience of business, professionals and academics, and for online learning and distance education.

This Web site is an initiative of the European Foundation Centre, which aims to create a single reference point for foundations. ICSU Navigator for Primary and Scientific Publications—Earth Sciences
The pilot version of a new gateway site covering all disciplines in the earth sciences, containing descriptions of nearly 1,500 titles. Search capabilities include context and keyword search. Ingenta.com
A global research gateway providing access to a vast database of some 610,000 articles in over 2,300 academic journals, professional and specialist publications. You can explore over one million article abstracts as a guest, or undertake article or journal searches, but will need to register for personal or institutional membership in order to get access to full-text articles. The full-text delivery of any article on the site is dependent on the publisher. If the user, or the user's organization, has a subscription to the journal, then access is allowed; otherwise there is a usually a pay-per-view service charges with rates set by content owners. http://www.ingenta.com/


InterCAT - A Catalogue of Internet Resources
The OCLS's Internet Cataloguing Project's catalogue of Internet resources; consists of a searchable database of some 92,000 bibliographic records for Internet resources that have been selected and catalogued by libraries worldwide. http://www.oclc.org/research/projects/intercat.shtm

Librarian's Index to the Internet
A massive searchable, annotated subject directory of almost 8,000 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their value to users of public libraries (in the US). A total of 5,520 subjects are currently covered, which can be browsed in an alphabetical index, with each subject item indicating how many resources/Web sites it contains. Portals to the World. Links to Electronic Resources Selected by Library of Congress Subject Experts
Portals to the World contains selective links to in-depth sources of information about the nations of the world, arranged by country or area, with the links for each sorted into a wide range of broad categories. The links were selected and evaluated by Library of Congress Area Specialists and other Library staff using Library of Congress selection criteria. PSCI-Com - Public Communication of Science

PSIGate

Renardus-Gateway Focus
Currently still being developed, Renardus aims to provide an academic subject gateway service for Europe for subject-focused Internet-accessible resources. Resource Discovery Network
A co-operative network of subject gateways providing access to descriptions of Internet resources selected for their quality and accuracy by subject specialists from within UK academia and affiliated organizations. Science and Technology Sources on the Internet. 
There is Such a Thing as a Free Lunch: Freely Accessible Databases for the Public (by Sandy Lewis)
From the Winter 2001 issue of Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship, this is a good descriptive inventory of databases that produce lists of citations to scientific literature, and which are freely accessible. SciTechResources.gov
Managed by the US Department of Commerce National Technical Information Service, this site provides scientists, engineers, and technologists with easy, one-stop access to key US government resources. Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG)

The WWW Library: Women's History
Maintained by the International Institute of Social History in the Netherlands, this is an extensive links collection of Web resources on women's history, including women's history institutions and organizations, libraries and archives, journals for women's studies, upcoming conferences, discussion lists, together with subject or region specific listings (e.g. African History, Asian History, Women Artists, Women in Media, Women in Medicine and Nursing, Women in Music, Women in Science and Engineering, Women Writers, etc.) which can be browsed or searched. This is a good starting point for searching the Internet for women's studies in general, and women's writing.
